The Kingston Bookshop was pleased once
again to salute teachers in a series
of luncheons across the island. The festivities began
at the Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort in Montego Bay on
Monday May 2 when the company hosted teachers from the
northwestern end of the island.
Special tribute was paid
to two retired stalwarts of the profession - Mrs Margaret
Waugh Lee, principal of William Knibb High School and
Mr Altiman Haughton, principal of Newhope Primary &
Junior High School.
Keynote speaker at the function was Mr Ruel Reid, President-elect
of the JTA and chairman was Mr Ray Howard, HRD manager
at the Holiday Inn.
On Tuesday the KB team headed by Chairman & Managing
Director, Mr Steadman Fuller and Director of Administration,
Mrs Sonia Fuller went across to the Golf View Hotel,
Mandeville where the focus was on teachers from the central
region of the island.
Another two teachers were selected for special awards;
they were: retired principal of the Knox Community College,
Mrs Elvris Hewitt Buckle and principal of the Mandeville
Primary & Junior High School and President of the
Caribbean Union of Teachers, Mr Byron Farquharson.
The keynote address at this function came from the Rev
Oliver Daley; pastor of the Ridgmount United Church and
chairman was the Rev Wayne Vernon, pastor of the Old
Harbour New Testament Church of God.
Wednesday, Teachers' Day,
found the team back in Kingston at the Terra Nova Hotel
with a record gathering of teachers from the eastern section
of the island. At this venue awardees were Dr Polly Bowes
Howell, retired principal of the Stony Hill Primary &
Junior High School and Mr Ray Howell, principal of the
Drews Avenue Primary School.
Keynote speaker was the
Most Hon Edward Seaga, Distinguished Fellow in the School
of Graduate Studies & Research at the University of
the West Indies; chairperson was the well-known broadcaster,
actress and communication specialist Fae Ellington.
All awardees were nominated by the Jamaica Teachers' Association.
Welcome was extended by Kingston
Bookshop Chairman & Managing Director, Mr Steadman
Fuller, at all functions.
